Most people only think about backups after losing something important. Setting up a reliable system takes less than an hour and then runs automatically.

Follow the 3-2-1 rule

  • 3 copies of your important data (the original plus two backups).
  • 2 different types of storage, such as an external drive and cloud storage.
  • 1 copy kept off-site — cloud storage counts.

Step 1: Back up your phone

  1. Open your phone’s settings and turn on the built-in cloud backup.
  2. Enable photo and video sync with your preferred cloud photo service.
  3. Check that backups run over Wi-Fi while charging.

Step 2: Back up your computer

  1. Use your operating system’s built-in backup tool with an external drive.
  2. Add a cloud backup or sync service for important folders.
  3. Schedule backups to run automatically.

Step 3: Test a restore

A backup you have never restored is a hope, not a plan. Every few months, try recovering a file to make sure everything works.

Sync is not the same as backup

If you delete or corrupt a file in a sync folder, the change can sync everywhere. Use a service or setting with version history.

How often should I back up?

Automatic continuous or daily backups are ideal. At minimum, back up weekly and before major updates.

Should I encrypt my backups?

Yes, especially for external drives that could be lost or stolen. Most built-in tools offer encryption; store the password safely.
